水飞蓟素的疗效归功于其具备数个作用点和作用机制：由于其对自由基的捕获能力，水飞蓟素具有抗地氧化活性。脂类化合物过氧化的病理生理学过程(造成细胞膜的损坏)，可被水蓟素阻断或阻止。并且在已经遭受损伤的肝细胞内，水飞蓟素刺激蛋白质的合成并使磷脂代谢正常化。那么，水飞蓟素胶囊临床上适用于什么症?有临床试验吗?

比如对于生殖毒性的临床表明，用大鼠和兔进行的生殖力研究，产前，围产期及产后的毒性研究，均未发现在生殖的各个阶段有任何副作用(试验的最大剂量：2500mg/kg)。特别是，水飞蓟素未显示有潜在的胚胎毒性。致突变性：体外及体内试验，水飞蓟素均呈阴性。致癌性：尚未对啮齿动物进行过体内实验。
