乳果糖在结肠中被消化道菌丛转化成低分子量有机酸，导致肠道内pH值下降，并通过渗透作用增加结肠内容量。上述作用刺激结肠蠕动，保持大便通畅，缓解便秘，同时恢复结肠的生理节律；在肝性脑病(PSE)、肝昏迷和昏迷前期，上述作用促进肠道嗜酸菌（如乳酸杆菌）的生长，抑制蛋白分解菌；促进肠内容物的酸化从而使氨转变为离子状态；降低结肠pH值并发挥渗透效应导泻；刺激细菌利用氨进行蛋白合成，改善氮代谢。
